The Stitches

Isobel also loves to get customers learning new stitches and working with different threads. In some of her kits she has included french and bullion knots as well as straight stitch, couching and stem stitch and also silver and gold thread. "These extra little stitches that are raised above the rest of the design help bring the whole thing to life" she says "for example the Egyptian Camel's headdress or the catkins on the Dragonfly Cushion."

To see which kits include different stitches and silver or gold threads please click on the individual designs. Detailed instructions for all the stitches are included with the kit and are shown below:

TENT STITCH

N.B. PRACTICE YOUR STITCHES FIRST ON THE SIDE OF YOUR CANVAS

When stitching from left to right:

First stitch: Bring your needle up through the canvas at 1 and take it down through the canvas at 2.
Second stitch: Bring the needle up again at 3 and down at 4. Continue in this way, keeping your tension even

FRENCH KNOTS

Bring your thread up through the canvas at 1 and wrap it around the needle twice.

Keep the thread taut and take the needle back down under the canvas at 2.

BULLION KNOTS

Bring your needle up through the canvas at 1. Now put your needle back through the canvas at 2 but do not pull it tight - leave a loop of thread. Now bring the point of your needle up again at 1 but don't bring it all the way through the canvas.
Take the loop of thread and wind it firmly around the needle 10 times. Continue holding the wool coils with one hand and pull the needle upwards with the other. Finally, take your needle back through the canvas at 2 and your knot is complete.

COUCHING

Lay 6 threads along the line of the design. Using two strands of the same wool, stitch over the laid threads with straight stitches making sure that the threads underneath are hidden. Finally, finish off the loose ends by stitching them into the back of your work.

STEM STITCH

Bring your needle up at 1. Pass over two cross-sections of thecanvas and take your needle down at 2. Bring your needle up at 3. Pass over two cross-sections of the canvas and take your needle down at 4. Repeat at 5 and 6.
N.B. When stitching from left to right, bring your needle up to the LEFT of your previous stitch, as shown in the diagram. When stitching from right to left, bring your needle up to the RIGHT of your previous stitch.
