FRENCH KNOTS |

Bring your thread up through
the canvas at 1 and wrap it around the needle twice.
Keep the thread taut and take the needle back down under the canvas at 2. |

BULLION KNOTS |

Bring your needle up through
the canvas at 1. Now put your needle back through the canvas at 2 but
do not pull it tight - leave a loop of thread. Now bring the point of
your needle up again at 1 but don’t bring it all the way through the canvas. |

Take the loop of thread
and wind it firmly around the needle 10 times. Continue holding the wool
coils with one hand and pull the needle upwards with the other. Finally,
take your needle back through the canvas at 2 and your knot is complete. |

COUCHING |

Lay 6 threads along the
line of the design. Using two strands of the same wool, stitch over the
laid threads with straight stitches making sure that the threads underneath
are hidden. Finally, finish off the loose ends by stitching them into
the back of your work. |

STEM STITCH |

Bring your needle up at
1. Pass over two cross-sections of thecanvas and take your needle down
at 2. Bring your needle up at 3. Pass over two cross-sections of the canvas
and take your needle down at 4. Repeat at 5 and 6. N.B. When stitching from left to right, bring your needle up to the LEFT of your previous stitch, as shown in the diagram. When stitching from right to left, bring your needle up to the RIGHT of your previous stitch. |
